Sharon Murphy was born and raised in Charles County, Maryland. Ms. Murphy began her career in State Government in July 1984 when she joined the small staff at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home as the Assistant to the Commandant. In the over 32 years at Charlotte Hall she has been an integral part in the operation and expansion of the Home, watching it grow from 4 residents and 20 staff, to the current occupancy of 410 residents and over 500 employees. Ms. Murphy’s dedication to the Home and its residents culminated in June, 2008, when she accepted the position of Director, Veterans Home Program, serving as the Contract Compliance Manager for the State of Maryland Veterans Home Operations. The day-to-day operation of the Home is the responsibility of the on-site management contractor through a management contract approved by the Board of Public Works.
As Director, Ms. Murphy is responsible for monitoring facility operations to ensure contract compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and to provide oversight of resident care, fiscal management and support services. Ms. Murphy represents the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs in contacts with Federal, State and local elected officials. She is responsible for preparing and administering the Home’s annual operating budget and capital improvement projects. Ms. Murphy serves as the on-site advocate for residents and responds to inquires by residents, family and elected officials. She is actively involved in the marketing of the home and maintains liaisons with veteran and community organizations locally and statewide to promote the awareness of Charlotte Hall Veterans Home and the services it provides.
In addition to her service to the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, Ms. Murphy serves as Vice President of the National Association of State Veterans Homes (NASVH) (2016-2017), a member of the Tri-County Veterans Advisory Council, is a Certified Licensed Assisted Living Manger, State of Maryland, and a Certified Dementia Care Practitioner
Since becoming Director in 2008, Ms. Murphy has overseen significant projects at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home to include:
- Applied and awarded federal grant to install 100% Emergency Generator Power for CHVH ($5.2 million);
- Procurement Officer for Request for Proposal for the Management Services for CHVH – 7 year contract ($70 million);
- Electronic Medical Records System implemented in 2014 facility wide;
- On-Site state-of-the-art Pharmacy
Ms. Murphy enjoys daily contact with the veterans and is dedicated to leading Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in achieving an even higher standard of excellence for Maryland’s only State Veterans Home.
