Third Annual Student Veterans Resource Providers Conference Held

In September 2013 the Third Annual Student Veterans Resource Providers Conference was held at The University of Maryland, College Park. The Conference was attended by 33 of the higher education institutions in Maryland.  The purpose of the Conference was to provide complete and up to date information on all aspects of veteran’s benefits and resources to attendees.  Best practices for serving veteran students on campus were shared.  In addition, the Conference provided the opportunity to further develop a statewide network for student veteran liaisons to strengthen our commitment to serving those who served.

Sessions included:

• GI Bill update
• Career  management update
• Transfer round table discussion (on the challenges associated with transferring from a two to four year college)
• Student veteran retention round table discussion (on establishing a community of veterans on campus in order to promote  student veteran success)
• Behavioral/mental health round table discussion (on increasing awareness of behavioral health issues facing student veterans)

Student veteran liaisons were in attendance to include VA certifying officials, faculty and staff who provide assistance and resource information to veterans, veteran student organization advisors, and veteran student leaders.
