Cost of Care

The cost of care varies per veteran depending on their income and service connected disability rating. All veterans receive a per diem subsidy from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to reduce their cost of care. The current US Department of Veterans Affairs per diem rates as of October 1, 2024, are:

  • $144.10 per day for Nursing Home Care = $4,395.05 per month savings

  • $62.20 per day for Assisted Living Care = $1,897.10 per month savings

  • A VP1- 70% or greater Service Connected veteran may be entitled to the full cost of nursing home care.

A non-veteran spouse wishing to reside in assisted living must pay the full cost of their care, prescriptions, and ancillary services.

Assisted Living Cost of Care

For Assisted Living, veterans pay 90% of their monthly net income (including social security, pension, annuity, retirement income, etc.) but not more than the full monthly cost. In most cases, veterans are permitted to keep 10% of their net monthly income as a spending allowance.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs Per Diem is calculated as a credit to the monthly statement.  The balance between the per diem credit and the veteran’s monthly income is subsidized by the State of Maryland.

Nursing Home Cost of Care

For Nursing Home, cost is based on the veteran’s personal resources, long-term care insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid (if eligibility requirements are met).

Highly trained staff are available to assist in understanding individual circumstances in relation to a payment for skilled and long-term care services rendered by Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.

VP1 – 70% Service-Connected Disability
A veteran rated 70% or greater with a service-connected disability may be entitled to the full cost of nursing home care.
