War Memorial Commission

Authorization for the War Memorial Commission was enacted in 1924. In 1970 it joined the Department of General Services and in 1999 was transferred to the Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families. Built in 1927 across from Baltimore City Hall, the War Memorial Building and Plaza honor Maryland residents who died in World War I and now pay tribute to all Maryland veterans.

The building is available for veterans’ groups, patriotic societies, and civic gatherings. Maintenance costs are shared equally by the State and the City of Baltimore.

The Commission’s ten members serve five-year terms. Five are appointed by the DVMF Secretary with the Governor’s approval, and five by the Mayor of Baltimore.
